1 昔時有人, Once upon a time there was a man
2 於眾人中歎己父德。 who was waxing enthusiastic among a large group of people about his father's virtues
3 而作是言: and he made this speech:
4 「我父慈仁, "My father was a kind-hearted man
5 不害不盜; he neither harmed others, nor did he steal from others,
6 直作實語, he was straightforward in his actions and truthful in his speech,
7 兼行布施。」 and in every way he practised generosity.
8 時有愚人, At the time there was a fool
9 聞其此語, who heard about the man's words
10 便作是念言: and he produced a thought as follows:
11 「我父德行復過汝父。」 "My father's virtuous conduct is still more advanced than your father's."
