This is like the monks
2 私犯一戒; who have secretly offended against one prohibition
3 情憚改悔, and who then are all afraid to make amends
but who keep quiet about their transgression and hide it.
They say about themselves that they are pure,
6 或有智者 but before they know it there will be wise men
7 即語之言: who will say to them:
8 「出家之人守持禁戒, "Monks will keep to the Buddhist prohibitions
as if they were guarding bright pearls
which they will insure do not drop to the ground.
Why is it that having offended against what you have accepted (as prohibitions) you insist on not repenting?"

1 The construction in the first two lines is subtly problematic: it is as if we had a postposed relative clause. The point is that the comparison is never with monks as such. It is only with a certain kinds of monks. Neither is the comparison with a simple (implicitly nominalised) sentence: for it is not with the monks privately breaking one prohibition.
8 The enjambement marks the opening of the decisive speech.
11 The triple ENJAMBEMENT marks the end of a dramatic speech.
