1 愚人亦爾。 The fools are also like this:
2 欲修布施, they wish to cultivate the making of donations,
3 方言: and then they say:
4 「待我大有之時, Let's wait until I have a lot of the stuff,
5 然後頓施。」 and only then will I make the donations at one go.
6 未及聚頃, Before they have accumulated the stuff
7 或為縣官水火盜賊之所侵奪, it may be either taken away by district officials, or by floods or fires, or by thieves or robbers,
8 或卒命終, or indeed they may suddenly meet death,
9 不及時施。 and do not at the proper time make their donations.
10 彼亦如是。 That person (in the above story) is the same as these.

1 愚人in BAIYU is ambiguous: it can refer to the stupid person in the parable, and it can refer to the person whose stupidity consists in a failure to grasp the proper way of Buddhism.
2 The cultivation 修 of a prescribed action is crucial to Buddhist practice. In pre-Buddhist Chinese what is cultivated tends to be one's person, and Confucian practice is typically described in terms not of 修 "cultivating" but of 行 "enacting".
4 The enjambement pattern in lines 3 and 4 is rare and complex. What is predictable about it is that it marks the crucial description of the incoherence of the fool's attitude.
5 The ENJAMBEMENT.TRIPARTITE is iconic of the compexity of the ways in which the money is lost, and the contrast with the cruelly concise line 8 is surely intended. There is the obligatory crescendo effect from line 7 to line 8 which is highlighted in this case by the fact that the heavier memberis the decisively shorter one.
10 Note the obligatory final EPIMONE (continued dwelling on a point already made) which almost functions as a signal that the interpretation of the parable is finished.
