Once upon a time there was a fool
2 將會賓客; who was about to assemble a group of guests,
3 欲集牛乳, in preparation for this he wanted to collect buffalo milk,
4 以擬供設; and thus he was planning to provide this for his guests.
On the occasion he had the following thought:
6 「我今若預於日日中𤚲取牛乳, "If I now in preparation for this day every mid-day I milk the buffalo
the buffalo milk will become more and more.
Then suddenly at some point there will be no place to put the milk,
or again the milk will go sour.
It will be best to just leave it filling up the buffalo's belly.
I shall wait until the time for our reunion comes
and will then take out the milk at one go."

6 Specification of thoughts is rare in pre-Buddhist thoughts, and when it happens it usually is in terms of speech undirected to an audience. There is, however, one case of 心曰 "said in his heart" in MENG.
7 Triple enjambement is not uncommon in BAIYU, and often it comes at dramatic points in the story.
11 Note that the main break is after 不如: enjambement of this sort is not rare in BAIYU. The principle maintained is that every line has a length of a multiple of four.
11 Series of equal-length enjambements without parallelism are always striking, and here the series marks the end of the thought.
